I have had a ton of quiet, still time here in Budapest. Time by myself to do nothing..... To sit outside and listen to the birds sing, to see the trees dance in the wind, to watch as the sky bursts with varying colours as the sun sets, to appreciate the deliciousness of a warm breeze as it caresses my skin.

At first I was frustrated, and wanting to be doing, moving, accomplishing. I had never sat still for a moment in my life and now a brick wall. Plus, I missed my friends and my daily routine that I took for granted.

It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

These days I find myself being extra thankful. Not only am I embracing new things I didn't even know I was missing, but I am completely in love with, and am grateful for the things I have left behind.

Happy Monday - Puppies

I went on a beautiful walk today. En route I met a new four legged friend. A little puppy, full of spunk and desperate for attention. He was in his front yard surrounded by an iron fence, and all alone. He was sticking his nose through the fence in hopes that he might catch someone's attention. I love puppies of all kinds so I was thrilled to stop and give him a pet. He was very thankful and showed his appreciation with wet kisses. I was overcome by a feeling of joy. I said bye to the puppy and continued on my way.

Funny thing-my puppy encounter left me shining with a happiness that stayed with me for most of the day.

It got me thinking about what other things or encounters have had that effect on me, and if I have ever had that effect on anyone... something to aspire to. How many people's (or puppies) lives can I shine some light into?

Happy Monday - Day Dreaming

I just saw the new Star Trek movie. It was great! Full of action, adventure, passion, heroes, villains, and triumph. I left the theatre beaming, throwing air punches, and imagining myself as one of the characters in the movie, the star, of course. I kicked some serious butt in my day dream. For the rest of the day I walked around with kind of a floating feeling. I felt excited by life and all the cool things we can do. We can captain a space ship, we can sail a pirate ship in the high seas, we can ninja kick our way through an army of opponents, we can sing in front of thousands of adoring fans, we can fly, name it and it can be done. From any where, at any time, you can day dream your way to anything. Isn't imagination fun!

I forget exaclty when and where I first read this quote: "Never let a crisis go to waste!". I remember writing it down, at the time, in my journal because I really liked it. It made me think. Never let a crisis go to waste... What an interersting way of looking at a challenge. Are obstacles merely opportunities for us to participate in our own evolution? If so, what if in one perception I could radically change my life?

Hello! My name is Lainne and welcome to Happy Monday!

This story begins at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Canada. Born from, self-serving roots, it started out as a weekly gathering of myself and a few friends. Our mission was to conquer the Monday blues. We decided that if we got together every Monday for dinner, drinks, coffee, whatever, that we would have something to look forward to, something to get excited about, and thus a reason to get out of bed without growling on Monday morning. Being cleaver students and budding intellectuals we aptly called our Monday evening social event ‘Happy Monday’.

It worked. In no time, I began to look forward to Monday, heck, I was even a little joyous about it. This joy stayed with me even after University. Most people found my Monday mood a tad, lets say curious.... I found myself sharing my University experience with friends, co-workers, sales people, waiters, bartenders, etc. It was becoming overwhelmingly obvious that most people were in definite need of some Monday cheer. Meanwhile, life had become very, very busy. I was living in a big corporate city, and the idea of making a weekly date with friends seemed unlikely. So, I embraced the standard means of communication and the Happy Monday text was given life.

Life has a way of consistently guiding one toward the direction of change, and growth, if you let it. I no longer live in a big corporate city. These days, my life is lived out of a suitcase (a whole other story). My main means of communication has become the internet via my constant companion, Angel, my macbook. Thus, bringing forth the inevitable evolution of Happy Monday.

I find myself pleasantly surprised to have witnessed the life cycle of a University experiment. The simple awesomeness that is Happy Monday has touched the lives of many people. It brings a bright smile to my face to know that even a small amount of grace can be found in its message.
